Former Archbishop of Washington Cardinal Theodore McCarrick reflect on religion's role in the 2012 race, foreign relations, and the Christmas season.
In a special Christmas edition of PRESS Pass, David sat down with Archbishop Emeritus of Washington Cardinal Theodore McCarrick. The Cardinal said that Christmas is a season of love and it comes "to remind us that there is a God and this is a God who loves us."
"God doesn’t only love us on Christmas, and doesn’t only give us a great gift on Christmas, he gives us that gift all year round," McCarrick said.
The Cardinal also weighed in on policy issues, including his call for the United States to develop "religious channels" in addition to diplomatic channels with foreign nations. McCarrick recently traveled to Iran to support the release of the imprisoned American hikers.
McCarrick said, "I do believe that there is, there is a role for a, a religious channel and what we find is, we will find that our relationships with many other countries and especially with countries which we find to be difficult today, there, there is a way in which we can talk and with God’s help, make a difference."

I think that religious leaders of all denominations should be much more active world wide in communicating with each other, they should act as diplomats in the midst of disputes that are essentially religious in nature. Why do we almost never hear from them? Don't they have responsibility to build understanding? The fact is people almost always get along people to people across borders and across religions but its government and religous leaders who create the great issues that lead to war. Religious leaders are not meeting their responsibilities.
How do you talk about Christmas and children when most of your priests are pedophiles.
I admit to not knowing the exact statistical numbers.... And, also admit to not being a Catholic.... But, case by case the greater number of pedophile teachers is a number that makes a land slide. It's OK to hate the Catholic church, and God. But, would you entrust the care of your children with the worst teacher or the best priest in the world? If you can honestly answer afore mentioned you might reconsider the easy and quite lazy reference to priest's.
Christian churches are businesses that are interested in mind control so that they can extract money from "their flocks." However, catholic priests are also constantly on the lookout for fresh young butts to plug.
HAHAHA! Diplomacy? We gotta blow them up like asap! This guy is an isolationist!
Ron Paul 2012
Another tax exempt preacher trying to get more control! Religion is regarded by the common people as true, By the wise as false, And the rulers as useful! SENECA (4BC-65AD)
A. Einstein, B. Franklin, and Newton would disagree.
Religion is nothing but trouble. It cause all sorts of problems. We need less religion, not more.
Stalin and Hitler would agree.
David Gregory,
You presented a segment with retired Cardinal McCarrick on your Christmas morning show. It is very infuriating to me to see you pander to Christians and to present to the public such a segment that distorts reality. McCarrick claims his god is loving and companionate toward human beings. Tell that to the hungry, unemployed, and homlesss in this country and the world. Religions are resulting in the killing each other in many countries at this Christmas time. Muslims are killing Muslims and Christians while Christians are killing Muslims. All this is in the name of a mythical god. You should be very ashamed to be airing such religious propaganda and pandering to the Christians.
Quite a Christmas message from the retired Cardinal Theodore McCarrick.
The Cardinal’s comment that stays with me was his concluding remarks on the abuse of children by priests. The Cardinal said, “We’ve taken care of it.”
Retired Cardinal McCarrick did not offer any details about his own role in the hierarchy in covering up the abuse for decades, secretly transferring priest- pedophiles and thereby exposing more innocent children to them. Pro Life. Indeed.
Nor did the Cardinal, while praising Pope John XXIII, mention this pope’s role in facilitating the career-long abuse of innocent kids, boys and women, which was conducted by Father Marcial Maciel. We are supposed to believe that the hierarchy, which urges prosecutorial action in the interests of Respect for Life, was clueless as Father Maciel fathered children. Pro Life. In deed.
If the representatives of the hierarchy want to regain credibility, they must speak honestly and stop with the “we took are of it” nonsense.
